08.07.02 the hike back Ok... so you've survived to the top of Vernal Fall. You're fatigued, your muscles ache, and your legs are sore. Now you've got to maneuver your way down the steps. I never thought I was scared of heights until then. I was barely able to walk over flat ground, and now I had to be stabilized enough to keep myself from tripping and rolling down the stairs, finally flying off the edge into the rocky waters below. Fun. I'm glad we decided to do this. Somehow, I survived to the bottom of the stairs. Even walking down seemed strenuous, but then some shirtless guy flew past me - because he was running. It seemed like a good idea and I tried it. It was much easier. Plus I didn't have to talk to anyone since they were all walking. The way back was mostly downhill, and I felt sorry for the poor suckers just starting up. I heard somebody asking somebody else if it was worth it - the person said that it was. And that their 7-year-old had no trouble. Great. I wanted to stop the person and tell them to run back down as fast as they could, but I didn't. We passed the river again and I really wanted to go in. I was all dirty because of the dusty trail. My ankles were brown. My Converse did get broken in though... now it looks like I've had them for awhile.
